Ask a casual Scrabble player what wins games and they'll say vocabulary — big, impressive words. Ask a tournament player and you'll get a stranger answer: two letters at a time.

Our dictionary contains exactly 96 two-letter words, and knowing them cold is the single highest-value memorization in all of word gaming. Not because QI or ZA will amaze anyone at the table, but because of what they unlock: parallel plays, board control, and an escape hatch for every terrible rack you'll ever draw.

Why tiny words are worth so much

Scrabble scoring has a quirk that beginners consistently miss: when you lay a word alongside an existing one, every new two-letter crossing it forms counts too. Play a five-letter word snugly parallel to another word and you might score six words in one turn. That entire style of play — the bread and butter of strong players — is impossible without two-letter words, because they're the connective tissue.

They're also how you dump problem tiles. Stuck with a V and no vowels coming? There is, painfully, no two-letter V word — which is exactly the kind of thing you want to know before you're holding one. Stuck with a Q and no U? QI (the life force in Chinese philosophy) is the most game-changing two-letter word of the modern era, worth 11 points before multipliers and often 30-plus on a premium square.

A few patterns worth noticing. Every vowel has a rich family — A alone starts sixteen. The consonant deserts are real: no two-letter words begin with C, Q, V, or Z in this list, and none contain a V at all. And the letters you'd expect to be useless are surprisingly employable: X has OX, AX, EX, XI, and XU — five outlets for an awkward eight-point tile.

The dozen that mark a serious player

Most of the list is ordinary English (AN, IT, GO). The competitive edge lives in the weird ones:

  • AA — rough, jagged lava. Yes, really. A Hawaiian loanword and the classic "that's not a word!" moment.
  • AE — one (Scottish).
  • JO — a sweetheart (also Scottish; Scotland has done word gamers many favors).
  • KA — the spirit or soul in ancient Egyptian belief.
  • OE — a whirlwind near the Faroe Islands. Possibly the most specific word in English.
  • QI — wait, check your list. QI is famously valid in official Scrabble dictionaries, but word lists differ; ours (built for general word games) doesn't include it, which is a useful reminder to know which dictionary your table plays by.
  • XI / XU — a Greek letter and a Vietnamese coin: the two escape routes for an X.
  • ZA — pizza, in official Scrabble play. Same caveat as QI: always confirm your dictionary before you bet the game on it.
  • UT — an old name for the musical note "do."
  • OM — the meditative syllable. Legal, and pleasingly calm to play.
  • MM / HM — the only words here with no vowels at all: sounds of pondering, officially sanctioned.

That last caveat — QI and ZA — deserves a highlight. Two-letter validity is where word lists disagree the most. Tournament Scrabble (official dictionaries), Words With Friends, and general word lists each draw the line slightly differently. If you play across apps, learn your app's quirks; the 96 above are your safe common core.

How to actually learn them

Don't memorize alphabetically — memorize by problem. Group them by the tile they rescue: what do I do with an X? (AX, EX, OX, XI, XU.) With a U glut? (UH, UM, UN, UP, US, UT, MU, NU.) With no vowels? (MM, HM, SH.) When the list is organized by the situations that actually hurt, recall becomes automatic exactly when you need it.

Then practice the parallel play. Next game, resist the urge to always build long words outward. Look instead for a spot where a modest word laid alongside another creates two or three of the words above as crossings. The score will surprise you — and your opponent.

The defensive game nobody mentions

Everything above treats two-letter words as offense — but strong players wield the list itself as defense, and it's worth learning both directions.

Blocking: because parallel plays need valid two-letter crossings, a spot on the board is only dangerous if the adjacent letters can form them. Before opening a lane next to a triple-word square, scan what crossings you'd be enabling. Ending your word so the letter beside the premium is a V or C — the two letters with no two-letter words at all — slams the lane shut. That's a free defensive move most casual players never see, hiding in plain sight in the list's gaps.

Challenge calibration: the 96 words are also your radar for opponents' bluffs. When someone drops a confident "ZO" or "KI," you're no longer guessing — you know the K and Z families cold (KA alone; no two-letter Z word here) and can challenge with the certainty of someone holding the map.

Offense fills your rack; defense wins close games. The same 96 words do both jobs — one more reason they're the densest knowledge in the game.
